Making the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) a Reality through Outreach and Extension Programmes
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE PRACTICE (100 words)
1. To spread the vision of UN by implementing and incorporating a select few SDGs in the regular practice of STC
2. To serve as the role model in the region in catering quality education
3. To build a socially fair, equitable, economically viable and environmentally friendly world
4. To promote social equality by participating in civil society and political life and mould students into responsible citizens
3. CONTEXT (150 Words)
This practice goes along with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals such as Quality Education-4, Good Health and Well Being-3, Reduced Inequalities-10, Decent Work and Economic Growth-8 and Clean Water and Sanitation-6.
Sree Saraswathi Thyagaraja College has a keen sense of social responsibility. The institution tries to implement the Sustainable Development Goals by offering Higher Education imbibed with societal concern. The institution aims in creating not only meritorious graduates but also responsible citizens. To implement Sustainable Development Goals and inculcate social, environmental, and national responsibilities the college conducts various extension activities throughout the year.
The College has 17 clubs and 3 student bodies like NCC, NSS, and Youth Red Cross. Associations of the departments also join hands with clubs and student bodies to exert service to the society. Centre for Rural Development plays a pivotal role in rendering the elite services.
4. THE PRACTICE (400 Words)
1.Education Related
(Quality Education - SDG 4): Sree Saraswathi Thyagaraja College, Pollachi in association with the National Daily Newspaper, The Hindu, Tamil Thisai, organises quiz and career guidance programme for the schools situated in the areas of Pollachi, Palani, Udumalpet and Dharapuram.
2. Health Related
(Good Health and Well Being - SDG 3): Centre for Rural Development organised village household survey under Swatch Bharat Abhiyan for the villages adopted under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA). CRD along with Pollachi Rotary and Indian Immunological Society, Hyderabad constructed a Sanitation Block at Government Higher Secondary School, Pollachi & Government High School, Gollapatti. Eye camps, blood donation campaigns, vaccination campaigns, Covid-19 Swabs tests were conducted.
3. Social Upliftment
(Reduced Inequalities- SDG 10): The institution has conducted various programmes related to social upliftment. Awareness Rallies related to cancer, drug abuse, child labour, helmet awareness were conducted.
4. Employment Related
(Decent Work and Economic Growth- SDG-8): The institution in association with Bombay Stock Exchange organized Investors Awareness Programme. Through the project rural, semi-urban citizens gained awareness in various concepts of savings and investments.
5. Environment Related
(Clean Water and Sanitation- SDG-6): STC is a participating institution under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), a flagship programme of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and has adopted the following villages for their development in collaboration with district administration.
1. Eripatti

4. Nallur
5. Ayyampalayam
Uniqueness
1. The institution adopts United Nations Sustainable Development Goals such as Quality Eduaction-4, Good Health and Well Being-3, Reduced Inequalities-10, Decent Work and Economic Growth-8 and Clean Water and Sanitation-6.
Extension activity is conducted in 5 fields catering to the needs of the local community and region. Apart from the curriculum the PG & Research Department of Social Work has mandatory outreach programmes.
EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS (200 Words)
Evidence 1
In the year 2021 to 2022, students of 45 schools were benefited and in the year 2022 to 2023 students of 50 schools were benefited. The Management of STC offered free scholarship to the winners of quiz finale which were scheduled on 7thApril 2022 and 23rd February 2023.
Evidence 2
Rs. 18,00,000 /-was spent to complete the Sanitation Project. The sanitation block was handed over for usage on 21.07.2023 and 31.03.2023 respectively. Construction of Toilets through health-related activity has benefited the following schools
• Gollapatti High School, Negamam - 320 students
• Municipal Boys High School, Pollachi - 600 students
• Government Higher Secondary School, Vettaikaranputhur- 600 students.

Various social issues have been addressed through campaigns and awareness rallies.
Evidence 4
Through BSE, Investor Awareness Programme nearly 2679 people were benefited in and around of Pollachi and Udumalpet Taluk. 60 Investors Awareness Programmes were conducted from 5ebruary to May 2019. The worth of grants received from BSE was Rs. 2.40,000/-
Evidence 5
Centre for Rural Development received Rs. 50,000/- grant under Unnat Bharath Abhiyan scheme and organised plastic awareness campaign in Eripatti, Ayyampalayam, Devampadivalasu, Nallur and Vaazhaikombu villages. on 24th, 25th & 26thof September 2019.
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND RESOURCES REQUIRED: (150 Words)
• To make students shed their inhibition while rendering the service is a challenging task.
• Lack of support, coordination, and participation from the village people.
• More funds to expand these initiatives.
