Overview

The Department of Social Work was established in the year 2005 and has been actively engaged in its domain fields since inception. The vision of the Department is  “Strengthening Human Relationships and Promoting Social Justice by deepening the Social Insights, Concerns and Commitment of the Students of Social Work to create a World with Peace, Harmony and Love”. The objective of the department is to provide quality education in social work. The department strives to shape future to put what they learn in the classroom into practise. It offers Post Graduate, M.Phil, Ph.D in Social Work Education in three fields of specialization namely, Human Resource Management, Medical & Psychiatry and Community Development. On successful completion of the course students are awarded a Master Degree in Social Work by Bharathiar University. The department has a sanctioned strength of six faculty members and sixty students. All the staff members in the department are well qualified and experienced with NET and Ph.D. All the Faculty Members have enormous field, teaching and research expertise in diverse field settings of Social Work. Master of social work, a Post Graduate and Research Programme based professional and academic discipline which is intended for improving the quality of life of an individual, groups and communities belonging to weaker sections. Social Work Profession promotes social change, the handling problems in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance their well-being. Utilizing theories of human behavior and social systems, this program intervenes at the point where people interact with their environment. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to Social Work (International Association for Social Workers).

As a whole, the PG Department of Social Work is committed to provide high quality education and training in social work and in related disciplines at postgraduate levels. In order to achieve this aim, the Department places important to emphasis on seeking academic excellence while at the same time encouraging scholars in the department to participate in and contribute by means of research, training and consultation to the different professional communities in Tamil Nadu. As a relatively small department, we see the importance of collegiality and team work and therefore seek to fostera good community spirit among colleagues and between scholars and students. The Department is committed to whole person education goals and the holistic philosophy of higher education. The department works in close collaboration with some pioneer social work institutes to creating better learning and career opportunities for students and faculty members.

The Department offers a 2 year PG degree in Social Work (MSW) with three specializations namely Human Resource Management (HRM), Medical and Psychiatry (M &P) and Community Development (CD).  The curriculum of the programme has three important components such as theory, field work and research. It enables the students to acquire necessary knowledge in methods of social work, and practical experience in scientific social research. To facilitate the above complex learning process, the training programme also includes independent study, lectures, seminars, research and concurrent and block fieldwork training. On completion of the course the students are placed with Social Work agencies for a period of six-weeks so as to fulfill the criteria of Block placement. The existing social workers’ association enables students to organize seminars, conferences and workshops on different social issues. The Department collaborates with several Government and Non-Government agencies in the fields work training and research. A career in social work is all about giving and helping others in need. From various NGOs (non-government organizations) across the nation to social development, a Master of Social Work (MSW) course provides comprehensive knowledge about the work put into the development of humanity and social welfare. After completing an MSW degree, candidates can work as Healthcare Social Workers, Clinical Social Workers, Therapists or Social Workers in the fields of Medical Health and Educational sector, among other career opportunities. Aspirants can pursue MSW as a full-time or even a part-time/distance education course. A full-time MSW course has a duration of two years; whereas, the duration of a correspondence MSW course is of five years.
